What to do with an old sofa in Dubai

A sofa is the item Dubai residents most often find themselves stuck with. It is too big to move alone, too large for a building bin store, and frequently too wide to leave the room it is sitting in.

There are a few genuine options, and one that is not an option at all.

What you cannot do: leave it by the bins

Building waste collection is designed for household bags. A three-seater in the bin store blocks the room, and in most buildings it will result in a notice to the resident who left it there — and it will still be sitting there afterwards.

The same applies to leaving it in a corridor, a stairwell or a parking bay. Those are shared spaces under building management's control.

Option 1: sell or give it away

If the sofa is in reasonable condition, listing it costs nothing and someone may take it. The catch is that whoever collects it has to get it out of your apartment, and most private buyers arrive with a car and an optimistic attitude rather than tools and a second pair of hands.

If you go this route, be honest in the listing about the floor, the lift and whether the sofa came in before the doorway was finished. A buyer who gives up halfway leaves you with a sofa in the hallway.

Option 2: ask the delivery team taking your new one

Some furniture retailers will remove an old item when they deliver a replacement, usually as a paid add-on and usually only for the equivalent item. It is worth asking at the point of purchase rather than on delivery day.

Two things commonly go wrong. The delivery team will not dismantle, so if the old sofa cannot leave whole it stays. And the building will only have booked one lift slot, which the delivery is already using.

Option 3: book a removal

This is the straightforward route: a crew comes with tools, takes the sofa apart if it needs it, carries it out and takes it away. It costs money, and in exchange the problem is entirely gone within an hour.

It is also the only option that reliably handles the difficult version of this problem, which is the sofa that physically cannot leave the room intact.

The doorway problem

Corner units and sofa beds are the two designs most likely to get stuck. Their frames are rigid, their turning circle is large, and Dubai apartment entrance halls often have a dog-leg that a three-seater will not negotiate.

A sofa that came in through an unfinished doorway during handover, before the frame and skirting were fitted, may genuinely never fit back out. That is not a failure of technique; it is a few centimetres of architrave.

The answer is dismantling: the frame comes apart in the room and leaves in sections. It is routine, it takes tools and time, and it is why it is worth telling whoever collects it in advance rather than letting them discover it.

How to make the collection go smoothly

• Take a photo of the sofa and a photo of the doorway or hallway it must pass through
• Say whether it is a two-seater, three-seater, corner unit or sofa bed — they are different jobs
• Check underneath before the day; things get lost under sofas
• Book the service lift if your building requires it
• Sequence it before your new sofa arrives, not after — two sofas rarely fit in one living room
